Psoriasis

Psoriasis is considered to be an autoimmune disorder, where your immune system mistakenly triggers rapid skin cell production, resulting in thick, silvery scales. In severe cases, psoriasis can lead to hair loss and affect various parts of the body.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is thought to be an autoimmune disorder where your body believes it needs to repair itself due to an underlying fault which results in over active cell production. It can affect a small area or the whole scalp and be mild to severe and presents itself in thick silvery scales. The underlying skin can be red, inflame and irritated, often causing the sufferer to scratch and itch the scalp which can result in bleeding and or hair loss. It can be hereditary and is not contagious. It can cause massive discomfort affecting (sometimes) a person’s confidence. It can also affect the whole body.

Signs of Psoriasis

Psoriasis presents itself as a fine to thick silvery scales on the underlying skin, causing a red and inflamed scalp.

It can affect behind and inside the ears as well as presenting itself outside of the hairline.

Affected nails will appear pitted.

When the scale is removed it will quickly rebuild itself due to overactive cells that are trying to protect the underlying skin.

It can cause hair loss especially when picked or scratched as the hair is often pulled out with the scale attached.

It feels tight, sore, itchy and generally irritated. The underlying skin can be cracked and or broken causing bleeding.

Possible Causes of Psoriasis

  • Auto immune issues
  • Hereditary
  • Stress

Psoriasis Treatment: Manage and Control Scalp Psoriasis

So, how do you treat psoriasis and restore your scalp health? There are no guarantees that the treatment of scalp psoriasis will remove it for good, but you can manage psoriasis flare-ups with effective treatments and expert care. Although saying that, we have had many clients that have been cured for good! There are all sorts of treatments available including Tar shampoos, steroid creams, vitamins and many more.

Use of steroid creams can cause thinning of the skin when used for long periods and usually only gives temporary relief so for both of these reasons they are best avoided if at all possible.

In house treatments have quicker and better results as we use Steamers to soften the scale and Infrared Lights to help heal the underlying skin.

With regular psoriasis relief treatments the areas become smaller and smaller and the regrowth of the skin build up becomes slower. Left untreated the condition can worsen and spread.
