How Does It Work?

Firstly you need to understand that your hair is an excretion of dead keratinised cells from your body.  Your cells are constantly dying & are disposed through your skin & scalp.

From the day you are born you have the maximum amount of follicles on your scalp.  This varies depending on your hair colour.  For example blondes have around 150,000 follicles whilst brunettes have around 100,000 & red heads, around 86,000.  Your hair has a life cycle which varies between 2-7years depending on how long your hair grows.

Everything you ingest is eventually excreted through your scalp or skin.  When the cells have died & keratinised in the dermal papilla the dead cells are pushed up & out of through your scalp producing your hair.

Pattern Baldness is caused by testosterone.  Boys start to produce testosterone at puberty, around the age of 13-16.  In women pre-menopause, poly-cystic ovaries or diabetes can all cause an increase in testosterone.

When testosterone & 5-Alpha reductase (an enzyme we produce) combine, they convert in to what is know as DHT (dihydro-testosterone).  DHT is the main cause of hair loss.

DHT is responsible for the slow down in cell division in the dermal papilla.  It blocks the nutrients & food getting to the base of the dermal papilla thus resulting in less cells to keratinise, divide, die & be excreted from the scalp.  This results in the hair becoming finer & shorter & the follicle becomes smaller until production stops completely, as seen on the diagram below

In the human body there are only 2 receptors of DHT, these are the top of the head & in men, also the prostate.

As the hair gets finer the scalp produces more sebum to protect the scalp, it is the sebum that fills the gap around the follicle.  If the follicle fails to produce a hair the whole follicle is filled with sebum, over time this can close off & kill the follicle for good.

So early intervention is the key.  If the follicle has not completely died it can be revived & reversed with low level laser treatment.
