Pityriasis Amientacea (Severe Dandruff)

Pityriasis Amientacea is a severe form of dandruff that results in silvery or yellowish scales forming on the scalp and hair. This condition can lead to hair loss if left untreated and requires proper treatment to prevent further damage.

Learn about the signs, causes and remedies for this scalp condition:

What Is Pityriasis Amientacea?

Pityriasis amientacea is a severe build-up of scale. It looks silvery or yellowish and can result in matted hair on your scalp. The scale grows along the hair shaft, flattening your hair to your scalp and  building on top of itself. If picked, clumps of hair can be pulled out with the scale attached.

It is more commonly found in children and young adults and effects females more than males - although males and older people can suffer with this condition too.

Signs of Pityriasis Amientacea

A silvery/yellow scale build up on your scalp and then the hair. Thick matted areas either localised or wide spread.

It can cause hair loss in affected areas due to clumps being pulled out when brushed or picked. It looks like tiles on a roof building on top of itself when left untreated or in severe conditions. The under lying scalp can be reddened and or weepy. When the scale is removed, it quickly starts to rebuild itself due to the excessive and fast skin production.

Possible Causes of Pityriasis Amientacea

Severe Dandruff Treatment: Get Relief From Pityriasis Amientacea

So, how do you treat Pityriasis Amientacea and prevent hair loss? This scalp skin condition can be cured with the correct treatment and dandruff removal products,  but will not rectify itself. The timescale on eradicating the scale depends on the severity of the condition as when the scale is removed it instantly starts to rebuild itself due to the excessive skin production. Regular treatments to manage Pityriasis Amientacea and restore scalp health are recommended as each time it is treated, the area becomes smaller and smaller. If left too long between treatments or untreated it can spread and thicken.

As with any condition, the earlier it is treated the quicker and better our scalp health will improve.
