Alopecia Totalis is a severe form of hair loss that affects the entire scalp and face, including the eyebrows, eyelashes and facial hair. It is often an advanced stage of Alopecia Areata but can also appear suddenly with rapid hair loss. While it can occur at any age, it mainly affects young children to middle-aged individuals - but it can be treated.
What is Alopecia Totalis
- Alopecia Totalis is total hair loss from the neck up including eye lashes, eye brows, nasal hair and beards.
- It can be the progression of Alopecia Areata or present itself quickly as Totalis with rapid hair loss.
- Sufferers are mainly young children to middle age but it can also affect the older generations too.
Signs of Alopecia Totalis
The body is denude of hair from the neck up including eye lashes, eye brows and beards. Hairs that look broken and are about 5mm long is a sign of active alopecia, these are called ‘explanation marks’. All forms of alopecia can affect your nails causing them to be brittle, pitted or deformed. Alopecia Totalis is an autoimmune disorder that results in your body’s defence system seeing your follicles as an anti-body. As a result of this your body starts to attack your follicles causing the hair loss.
